The Front Door Project

Sold!  We just closed on the house in January of 2010

When we first moved into our house in Syracuse, I remember looking at the front door and feeling like something was off. The door was the exact same dingy white as the rest of the house, making the entryway feel so bland and uninviting. It was clear that the first thing I needed to do was give it some personality. So, with a fresh can of warm teal paint in hand, I went to work. It was a small change, but it made a huge difference—our home suddenly felt more welcoming, more us. #priorities

That warm teal was just the beginning. Little did I know that over the next ten years, I would end up changing the front door color seven times. Each color brought a new energy to our home, and it became my favorite way to give the house a quick and cheerful facelift. Plus, it’s an inexpensive way to keep things feeling fresh and new. Of course, the neighbors probably think I’m a little strange for constantly repainting, but it’s worth it!

Teal in 2011-2015:
Teal was the perfect choice to kick off our colorful door journey. It was bold yet calming, making our home feel like a safe haven.

Satchel, the best doorman there was.

Coral Gables in 2016-2017:
By 2016, I was craving something warmer and more vibrant. Coral Gables was a fun and unexpected choice that added a pop of color against the house’s neutral tones. It was like a little burst of sunshine every time we came home.

Daring Yellow in 2018:
2018 was the year of Daring Yellow, and boy, did it live up to its name. This bright, cheerful color was impossible to miss, and it made our house the talk of the block (in a good way, I hope!).

Hummingbird Green in 2019:
Next came Hummingbird Green in 2019. This shade was fresh and lively, almost like bringing a bit of the garden right to our doorstep. It felt like nature was welcoming us home every day.

Covid year! Wash your hands.

Red Tulips in 2020:
Red Tulips in 2020 was a bold and confident choice. The deep red made a statement and felt especially cozy during the holidays, bringing warmth and cheer to those cold Syracuse winters.

One of my favorite colors, ever.

Brilliant Blue in 2021:
Brilliant Blue took over in 2021. It was vibrant yet soothing, and I was completely obsessed with it. That shade of blue felt like it was made for our home, and it stayed with us until I felt the urge to change again.

Cherry Red in 2022:
In 2022, I decided to go bold with Cherry Red. It’s a classic, eye-catching shade that adds a touch of elegance and a lot of personality to our home’s exterior. The contrast against the house’s neutral tones really made it pop, and it was a real showstopper.

Swiss Blue in 2024:
And now, in 2024, our front door proudly wears Swiss Blue. This cool, serene shade has brought a new level of sophistication to our home’s exterior. It’s airy, light, and has a subtle charm that I’m absolutely loving. For now, Swiss Blue is here to stay, and I’m still totally smitten with it.

Looking back at the photos from over the years, I’m so grateful to have these visual memories. They’re like a timeline of our lives—the kids growing up right before our eyes, our beloved pets in the background, and my ever-changing hairstyle and color. Each photo captures not just the different colors of the door but also the inviting entryway of the place we’ve made our home.

As much as I love the current Swiss Blue, I know that one day the urge to change it will strike again. When that day comes, I’d love to hear your suggestions. What color do you think I should try next?

Thanks for reading, friends! Let’s keep our homes as colorful and full of life as possible. 🏡
